College Students and Upper Respiratory Infections

Tuesday, Jan 21, 2025

Are you suffering from a sore throat, headache, muscle aches, coughing and sneezing, or runny or blocked nose? You might have an Upper Respiratory Infection (URI).

Upper respiratory infections are a common health issue among college students, significantly impacting their academic performance and overall well-being. Dr. Teresa Gallo-Thys, one of the physicians at Florida Atlantic’s Student Health Clinic, says “These infections, which include the common cold, sinusitis, and pharyngitis, are caused by a variety of viruses and bacteria and are highly contagious.”

College students are particularly susceptible to URIs. Many students live in dormitories or shared housing, where close contact facilitates the spread of infections. Academic pressures and social demands can weaken the immune system, making students more prone to illnesses. Irregular sleep patterns, inadequate diets, and high alcohol consumption can also compromise immune function.

At Student Health Services, we have point of care testing for common infectious conditions that can be performed during your visit. This allows our team to accurately diagnose your condition and provide personalized treatment.

If you do develop a cough, sore throat, or other URI symptoms, make an appointment at Florida Atlantic’s Student Health Clinic.
